Avenn · honest comparison
AI life coach vs therapy
These are not competing products, and treating them as substitutes is the expensive mistake in both directions. One is a tool for building forward. The other is regulated treatment delivered by a licensed professional. Here is the line between them, and how to tell which one you are actually looking for.
Avenn is coaching support, not therapy. It does not diagnose and it is not a crisis service. If you need urgent help, see our crisis line directory.
| Avenn | Therapy | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A coaching tool. You talk through goals, habits, decisions and direction, and leave with something to do. | Talk therapy is a set of treatments, delivered one-on-one with a licensed mental health professional. |
| Which way it faces | Forward. What you want next, and what is in the way of it. | It treats what is wrong, including experiences and conditions that need care. |
| Can it diagnose | No. An AI life coach does not diagnose anything, and Avenn will not try. | Yes. Diagnosis is part of licensed clinical practice. |
| Who is accountable | A software company. There is no clinical licence behind it and no regulator of care. | A licensed professional, accountable to a professional body. |
| Availability | Any hour, no appointment, no waitlist, in a browser tab. | By appointment, subject to availability and in many places a waitlist. |
| Cost | Free plan. Pro is $14.99 a month or $59.99 a year. | Varies by provider, region and coverage. Typically the larger cost of the two. |
| In a crisis | Not a crisis service. Avenn stops coaching and hands off to real crisis lines: 988 in the US, 9-8-8 in Canada. | Your provider will have a crisis plan. Outside that, crisis lines are the immediate route. |
Six situations, and what each one calls for
You keep setting the same goal every January and never get past week three. That is a coaching problem. The issue is structure and accountability, not treatment, and a coach that remembers what you committed to last week is the shape of the fix.
You cannot tell whether you hate your job or hate the way you have been living for two years. Start with coaching. If the exploration keeps arriving somewhere darker than the job, that is your signal to move.
Something happened and you are not the same since. That is therapy. A coaching tool is the wrong instrument for it and will waste the months you would rather spend getting better.
You are already in therapy and want somewhere to work on habits between sessions. These stack well. Coaching handles execution, therapy handles treatment, and your therapist is the right person to ask whether that split is right for you.
You cannot afford or access a therapist right now. This is the hardest one, and the honest answer is that a coaching tool is not a substitute for treatment, it is just available. Use it for what it is good at, and keep looking for care. Crisis lines are free and staffed around the clock.
You are thinking about hurting yourself. Neither. Call or text 988 in the US or 9-8-8 in Canada, right now. Both are free, confidential and open every day of the year.
Where AI coaching genuinely wins
Access is the real argument, and it is a strong one. There is no appointment, no waitlist and no cost barrier to the first session, and it is there at eleven at night when the thought actually shows up. That is a category of help that mostly did not exist before.
It is also unembarrassing. People say things to a coaching tool that they would take three sessions to say to a person, and getting the thing said is often the whole unlock.
What it does not win is depth, accountability and care. Those come from a trained human who is responsible for you, and no amount of product design substitutes for that.
How Avenn stays on its side of the line
Avenn is a coaching tool and says so everywhere it can: it does not diagnose, it is not a medical service and it is not a crisis service. That sentence is in the product, not only in the terms.
When language suggests a crisis, the product stops coaching and surfaces real crisis lines instead of trying to help. You can see the full list in our crisis line directory, open to anyone with no account.
If you want the longer version of this argument rather than a table, we wrote it up in the journal.
When therapy is simply the answer
If you need a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or care for a mental health condition, that is therapy and only therapy. An AI life coach cannot do any of it and should not pretend otherwise.
If you are in crisis, or anywhere near it, skip both and go straight to a crisis line. In the US, call or text 988. In Canada, call or text 9-8-8. Both are free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, every day.
If you are unsure which side of the line you are on, that uncertainty is itself a reason to talk to a professional first. Coaching will still be here afterwards.
