Avenn vs Pi

Both let you talk to an AI about your life. They are built around different jobs: Pi is a general conversational companion, Avenn is a structured coach that carries your goals forward. Here is what each one publishes about itself, with the pages we checked.

Avenn is coaching support, not therapy. It does not diagnose and it is not a crisis service. If you need urgent help, see our crisis line directory.

Avenn details are our own. Pi details come only from Inflection and Pi public pages and the Pi App Store listing, checked 2026-09-30. Where those pages say nothing, this table says so.

The real difference is structure, not intelligence

Pi is built as a companion you can talk to about anything. That openness is the point, and it is genuinely good at it. There is no goal object, no session boundary, no plan you are working through. You bring a subject, it talks with you about the subject.

Avenn is built around a coaching arc. A session has a shape: what you want, what is actually in the way, what you will do before the next one. The next session opens where the last one closed, because the goal is progress you can see rather than a good conversation you enjoyed and forgot.

If you want to think out loud, either will serve you. If you want the thing you decided on Tuesday to still be on the table on Sunday, that is a different product.

On price, be careful what you compare

Neither Inflection nor Pi publishes a pricing page, and the Pi App Store listing shows the app as free with no in-app purchases listed. So the honest statement is that Pi has no published paid tier, not that it is free forever by policy. Products without published prices can introduce them.

Avenn publishes its prices and keeps a free plan that is not a countdown. Your first week is unlimited, then the free plan gives you one full coaching session every day, with unlimited messages inside that session. Pro is $14.99 a month or $59.99 a year and removes the daily limit.

Starting anonymously actually matters

The hardest moment to use a coaching tool is the moment you most need it, and a sign-up wall sits exactly there. Avenn lets you open a session in a browser tab and start talking, with no email and no card. If you later want your history and goals kept, an account takes seconds and the daily free session stays free.

Pi public pages do not state whether an account is required to start. The chat screen presents a name prompt alongside log in and sign up, so the reachable answer is: check it yourself before you rely on it.

When Pi is the better pick

If what you want is a wide-ranging conversational companion with no structure imposed on it, Pi is designed for that and Avenn is not. Avenn keeps pulling the conversation back toward a goal, which is useful when you have one and mildly annoying when you do not.

If you want to stay inside one large general assistant rather than add another tool, that is a real reason and no comparison table changes it.

And if what you actually need is treatment rather than coaching, neither tool is the answer. A licensed professional is. Talk therapy is delivered by a licensed mental health professional, which is a category neither of these products is in.
